When you think about driving etiquette, what comes to mind? Common answers may include yielding the right of way, following at a safe distance, and lowering your high beams in the face of oncoming traffic. However, one aspect of driving that doesn't get a lot of attention in regards to etiquette, is the fast food drive-thru. Here are two things to consider next time you're looking for a quick bite to eat.
It may seem silly, but many people seem to miss the purpose of a drive-thru, which is to provide a convenience for customers by moving smaller order through quickly. If the vehicle in front of you wants six meals and multiple add-ons, the ordering process alone will take several minutes. All you wanted was to grab a cup of coffee and be on your way, but now you're stuck in line. This brings us to our first point: If you have a large order for several people, park the car and go inside. It won't take any longer, and you won't be holding up the line outside. The employees inside, who are often graded on drive-thru efficiency, will be grateful as well.
The second aspect of drive-thru courtesy, is having your money ready. Whether you're using cash or card, have it ready to go by the time you get to the window. It saves everyone time, and will save you from the glaring eyes of the queue that's growing behind you.
Chances are, drive-thru etiquette is a thought that rarely crosses people's minds, but it's a simple thing to address, and it can make a big difference in someone's day. So, next time you have the chance, start spreading the word.
