If the engine is the heart of the car, then oil is its lifeblood. Yet how much do you know about this substance, and why it is so important to change it regularly?
Oil begins in a reservoir called the sump. It is sucked from the sump through a pickup tube, where it is pressurized and sent on a journey around the engine.
First, it passes through the oil filter, which removes particulates which could damage the engine. Keeping your oil filter clean and replaced is vital to engine health, especially if you travel dusty roads.
From the filter, oil flows across all your engine parts-- the bearings, to the pistons, to the valve train. In these parts, oil not only prevents buildup of harmful residues, but it prevents metal from grinding on metal. Without clean oil, your engine parts would create friction, excess heat, and would slowly wear away.
Be sure to visit Philpott Pre-Owned Super Center for routine service and oil and filter changes, about every 7,500 miles.
