Things may be fairly verdant in the Beaumont area, but the entire western half of Texas is arid desert, where every drop of water is precious.
Even here, it's easy to see how fresh water could be hard to come by in the absence of rain and protected reservoirs. Sabine Lake, bordering Port Arthur, is a salty, brackish estuary, and the industrialized Neches River is not exactly a body of water you'd want to drink out of.
So imagine that it didn't rain for a long time. Imagine the reservoirs ran dry. What would you do?
One engineer for Ford Motor Company came up with a brilliant and simple plan. The On-The-Go H2O system, which may one day be a feature on Ford models, collects the condensation generated by running the air conditioner, and filters it through a powerful 0.1-micron filter to remove any contaminants.
On a humid day, On-The-Go H2O can generate a half-gallon of filtered water per hour -- nearly enough for basic survival. Not only can it draw water out of thin air, users can also manually add contaminated water so it can be filtered. In many water-stressed areas around the world, this innovation could be life-saving.
