Checking Your Oil
This should be done once a month. Make sure the engine is cool, then locate the oil dipstick under the hood. Wipe the dipstick clean, re-insert, and pull out again. Now you can get an accurate reading of the oil level on the stick. Clean oil should be amber colored and free of any gritty particulates.
Checking Transmission Fluid
Like oil, the transmission fluid should be checked monthly. It is also checked using a dipstick located under the hood, but the engine must be running with the car in park. Transmission fluid should be bright red, clear, and at the correct level on the dipstick. If all goes well, you will never need to replace or top off this fluid for the life of the car, but if its level is low, color is dark, or smells burned, then it's time for a service appointment.
