When you start up your engine, there are many different parts that contribute to that power starting and then being transferred to other areas of your vehicle. A transfer case is something you’ve probably never heard of, but this is an essential part of your vehicle’s drivetrain. A transfer case is essentially transferring power over to your axles and wheels.
Axle Power
A vehicle that has multiple powered axles can be four wheel drive or all wheel drive. The transfer case will take power from the transmission, and it will move over to the axles in the front and rear of your vehicle by way of your driveshaft. During this process, your wheels will become synchronized so they are moving at the same pace. Keep an eye out for issues relating to your transfer case that will present themselves as a loud grinding noise.
