Having a great time on a solo road trip, or with your lover or bestie, doesn't have to cost a fortune. Follow these five guidelines to have a blast and save some cash.

Five Key Pointers:

  1. Leave around noon and eat lunch before you so. Plan Friday night's event, an relax on Saturday then do something spontaneous Saturday night.
  2. Pack your meals and find accommodations with a microwave and mini-fridge in the room. If you eat out at all , only have one meal at a restaurant.
  3. Stay within 200 miles or four hours of driving from home. Make a flexible schedule for free or inexpensive activities.
  4. Only bring one outfit, but also a roll of quarters and a cleaned out soda bottle with your laundry detergent and/or softeners. You can wash the clothes you wore out on Friday at a laundromat or even the hotel for seven bucks or less and wear them home Sunday.
  5. Only do any shopping on Sunday, along the drive home. Plan to be back home in the afternoon and eat dinner at home.
