Auto-dimming rearview mirrors can be so useful at night. They prevent bright lights from blinding you when you're driving around Nederland, and as a result, they can make it safer for you to be on the roads after the sun goes down. Some of the new models at Philpott Pre-Owned Super Center feature them.

How can these mirrors do their jobs so effectively? The answer is related to a material called electrochromic gel. This gel can change color when an electric current is applied to it. In auto-dimming rearview mirrors, the gel is sandwiched between two layers of glass, and it receives a charge whenever the sensors embedded in the mirror detect bright lights. This charge causes the gel to darken.

When the electrochromic gel has darkened, it won't let as much light pass through it. The bright lights shining behind you will seem dimmer when they reflect back into your eyes through the mirror.
